How to produce thin film solar cells
The cost issue is the biggest obstacle to the widespread use of solar technology. Traditional silicon solar cells require a complicated and time-consuming production process, which greatly increases the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity. Non-silicon thin-film solar cells are easy to produce and therefore easier to break through cost barriers.
The biggest breakthrough in the production of thin-film solar cells is in the foil-shaped copper indium gallium selenide battery. Nano solar companies use a method similar to offset printing to produce their solar cells. Let's take a look at how they do it.
First, a large number of aluminum strips are slowly advancing in a huge printer. Just like printing newspapers, aluminum strip rolls can reach several meters wide and several miles long, which allows the product to be used for different purposes.
Second, a printer operating in the open air deposits a thin layer of semiconducting ink on the aluminum substrate. This is a huge progress made in the mass production of glassy copper indium gallium selenide batteries and cadmium telluride batteries. The original production required semiconductors to be deposited in a vacuum chamber, but now it can be carried out in the open air, faster and lower cost .
Next, another printer deposits a thin layer of cadmium sulfide and zinc oxide, where the zinc oxide layer is non-reflective, which ensures that sunlight can reach the semiconductor layer.
